Video of Illustration Process

Before the xmas break I did a quick video capture of my illustration process. This is an image from issue #1, though this is a recreation of that art since I didn't think to video capture it when I did it 6 months ago or whatever. I have no idea if anyone will find this interesting or not, but here it is (again on YouTube):

I, for one would like so see some of those juicy fight scenes filmed in this way. Or, inversely, shots from a webcam facing you while you were working. Like the PSP ads. Maybe too postmodern a request....

Also, I can't turn on my speakers right now (baby sleeping) but was there musical accompaniment? What if any where the tunes that played during the creation of the project?

There wasn't any music. And to record the illustration of the fight scene coming up in issue 5 like this would be a lot of work. I tend to go revisit the art a lot, making minor tweaks here and there, testing what background elements work in each frame, adjusting shadows, etc. So I usually don't illustrate all the elements in a given frame all at once. This video of me illustrating Jake isn't the actual art that was used in frame 14 of issue one. I recreated the art because 1) I didn't record anything 6 months ago when I started this and 2) that way I could do all the art in one go with as few pauses as possible.

As far as what music I listen to when I work goes, I'd hate to list out the artists for fear that my bad taste in music would damage our credibility as creative people.

On the theme of capturing images of the creation process for posterity ... you may want to try this app.

SCWebCam

I used for a while at work. It works like a webcam. It captures images at intervals and saves them online or to a local location. Except in reverse. It takes screenshots of your desktop. You can leave it running pretty much all the time and then animate the images of your choice 1/9/2006 10:32AMtogether. I used it as a kind of memory back up ... what was I doing at around 11:00? etc.

The worst thing is that it can be pretty incriminating if you forget that everything you do on your computer is benign recorded. However if you own your own spyware at least you can delete it.

In Blackadder 4 Baldrick tried to protect himself from that bullet with his name in it ... by owning a bullet that he scratched his name into. Same idea ... I guess.

New issue is coming soon. My first daughter was just born -- so that combined with the end of the year holidays has slowed us down a bit. Plus issue 5 is the longest issue to date. But it is coming soon. Maybe another week?
